Enhanced Definition

An unexpected termination of a program or job due to an error condition. Common in batch processing environments where jobs fail before completion.

Key Characteristics

    • Generates system completion codes (e.g., S0C7, S0C4) that indicate the type of error
    • Can be caused by data errors, programming bugs, resource constraints, or system problems
    • Produces diagnostic information including dumps and error messages
    • May trigger automatic restart or recovery procedures
    • S0C1 - Operation exception (invalid instruction)
    • S0C4 - Protection exception (storage access violation)
    • S0C7 - Data exception (invalid packed decimal data)
    • S322 - Job or task exceeded CPU time limit
    • S806 - Program not found in load library
    • U0001-U4095 - User-defined completion codes
