Enhanced Definition
An unexpected termination of a program or job due to an error condition. Common in batch processing environments where jobs fail before completion.
Key Characteristics

- Generates system completion codes (e.g., S0C7, S0C4) that indicate the type of error
- Can be caused by data errors, programming bugs, resource constraints, or system problems
- Produces diagnostic information including dumps and error messages
- May trigger automatic restart or recovery procedures
