Product Overview

The DYL2CBL architecture comprises three main components: the Parser, the Conversion Engine, and the Code Generator. The Parser analyzes the DYL280 source code, identifying syntax and semantic elements. The Conversion Engine translates the parsed DYL280 code into an intermediate representation, handling data type conversions and logic transformations.

The Code Generator then produces the equivalent COBOL or sort code based on the intermediate representation. These components communicate internally, with no external APIs exposed. Configuration is managed through JCL or control cards, which specify input and output datasets, conversion options, and error handling.

For example, the `INFILE` parameter specifies the input DYL280 file, and the `OUTFILE` parameter specifies the output COBOL or sort file. The system does not use any external databases or storage mechanisms beyond the file system for input and output. Network requirements are minimal, as the tool operates locally on the z/OS or zVSE/VSEn system.

The command-line interface provides administrative capabilities, and logging features enable monitoring of the conversion process. Authentication relies on the underlying operating system's security. DYL2CBL supports the underlying operating system's authentication methods.

DYL2CBL's main advantage is its ability to automate the migration process, reducing manual effort and potential errors compared to manual conversion. It differs from manual conversion by providing automated code transformation and from other tools by its specific focus on DYL280 to COBOL/sort conversion.
