The architecture of EMC TimeFinder involves several key components working together to provide point-in-time copy functionality. The core component is the TimeFinder software, which resides on the host system and manages the snapshot operations. This software interacts with the EMC storage array, which provides the underlying hardware-level snapshot capabilities.
The host system initiates and controls the snapshot creation, split, and restore processes. Communication between the host and the storage array occurs over Fibre Channel and SCSI protocols. The CLI and storage management tools provide the administrative interfaces for managing TimeFinder operations.
The 'create pair' command establishes a relationship between the source and target volumes. The 'establish' command synchronizes the data. The 'split' command creates the snapshot, and the 'restore' command copies data back to the source volume.
The host system's logging facilities and the storage array's management tools provide audit trails. The access control model relies on the host operating system's user and group permissions. Compared to IBM FlashCopy and Hitachi ShadowImage, TimeFinder's architecture is optimized for EMC storage platforms, providing specific snapshot mechanisms and integration.
