FileArc's architecture is centered around three primary components: the Backup Engine, the Restore Engine, and the Index Builder. The Backup Engine is responsible for reading VSAM datasets and writing the data to backup media, utilizing optimized I/O routines for high-speed data transfer. The Restore Engine reads data from the backup media and writes it back to the VSAM datasets, ensuring data integrity during the restore process.
The Index Builder is used to rebuild indexes for key-sequenced datasets (KSDS) during the restore process, optimizing performance. Communication between these components occurs through z/OS system services and data sets. The Backup Engine and Restore Engine interact with VSAM datasets directly, leveraging z/OS access methods.
The Index Builder utilizes VSAM services to rebuild indexes. FileArc uses VSAM datasets for storing both the original data and the backup data. Optional compression is achieved using z/OS compression algorithms, and encryption is implemented using z/OS encryption facilities.
The product integrates with z/OS through JCL, system calls, and control cards. The administrative interface is primarily through JCL and the z/OS console. User management leverages z/OS security features, including RACF or equivalent security managers.
Configuration parameters are set via JCL parameters and control cards, allowing customization of backup and restore processes. Monitoring is achieved through system logs, job output, and SMF records. FileArc's design prioritizes high-speed data transfer and efficient resource utilization, making it an ideal solution for large-scale VSAM data management.
