The architecture of Rocket SmartTest is designed to provide comprehensive debugging capabilities for z/OS applications. The main components include the SmartTest Debug Engine, the Source Code Analyzer, and the Session Manager. The Debug Engine is responsible for controlling the execution of the program being debugged.
It interacts with the z/OS operating system to manage breakpoints, step through code, and inspect variables. The Source Code Analyzer parses and interprets the source code of the application. It provides the ability to view the source code, set breakpoints, and display variable values.
The Session Manager manages the debugging sessions, including starting, stopping, and saving session configurations. Communication between these components occurs primarily through internal z/OS interfaces. The Debug Engine and Source Code Analyzer interact to provide source-level debugging functionality.
The Session Manager coordinates the overall debugging process. Rocket SmartTest utilizes standard z/OS storage mechanisms for storing debugging session data and configuration information. The tool integrates with the z/OS security system for authentication and access control.
Network requirements are minimal, as the tool operates within the z/OS environment. Compared to other debuggers, SmartTest's architecture is optimized for debugging COBOL, PL/I, and Assembler applications, with specific support for CICS and IMS environments. This architecture ensures efficient debugging and comprehensive support for enterprise applications.
