The CA-1 Copycat Utility's architecture comprised several key components. The Job Entry Subsystem (JES) served as the primary interface for job submission. Users submitted JCL jobs containing control statements that defined the copy operations.
These control statements specified input and output datasets, tape volume serials, and compression options. The Tape Management System (TMS) was used for tracking tape volumes and managing tape libraries. The utility itself processed the copy and load operations, reading data from input datasets and writing it to output tapes.
The utility did not have a separate database; it relied on the z/OS system logs for auditing and error tracking. Communication between components was primarily through the z/OS operating system. The utility's operational flow involved submitting JCL jobs, which were then processed by JES, interacting with TMS for tape volume information, and executing the copy operations.
The utility has been merged into CA Copycat. For continued tape management, migrate to CA Copycat or consider alternatives like IBM DFSMSdss or BMC AMI Tape Management.
