CBLVCAT's architecture centers around a batch processing model, designed for z/OS, z/VM, and zVSE/VSEn environments. The main components include the JCL Processor, the VTOC/Catalog Access Module, and the Report Generator. The JCL Processor parses input parameters from the JCL, validating syntax and preparing the execution environment.

The VTOC/Catalog Access Module interacts with the operating system to retrieve dataset metadata from the Volume Table of Contents (VTOC) and system catalogs. This module uses standard system services, such as SVC calls, to access the required data. The Report Generator formats the output based on user-specified parameters, producing reports that can be directed to SYSOUT datasets.

Communication between components is primarily through data structures and control blocks passed within the batch job's address space. The utility uses standard z/OS data access methods and does not require any specific network ports or external databases. The ISPF interface, available with SELCOPY/i, provides an alternative, interactive interface to the batch processing.

The primary storage mechanism is the z/OS system catalog and VTOC. The utility does not expose any APIs. Security relies on standard z/OS security mechanisms, such as RACF or equivalent, for access control to datasets and system resources.
