DASD Backup Supervisor

The architecture of DASD Backup Supervisor is centered around several key components that work together to automate and manage disk backup and restore operations on z/OS. The Volume Inventory Manager maintains a comprehensive list of disk volumes to be backed up, allowing for automated selection and scheduling. The JCL Generator is responsible for creating the necessary JCL based on the configured backup methods (DFSMSdss, FDR, or FDRABR), schedules, and volume selections.

The Backup Scheduler orchestrates the execution of backup jobs, ensuring that backups run according to the defined schedules. The Report Manager provides detailed reports on backup operations, including success/failure status, performance metrics, and audit trails. Communication between components occurs through z/OS system services and control files.

The Volume Inventory Manager uses system datasets to store volume information. The JCL Generator reads configuration parameters from control cards and system datasets. The Backup Scheduler interacts with the z/OS job scheduler to submit and manage backup jobs.

The Report Manager accesses log files and system datasets to generate reports. Security is integrated through z/OS security systems (RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret), which control access to the system and its resources. The product does not expose any external APIs.

Network requirements are minimal, as the system operates within the z/OS environment. The primary administrative interface is through ISPF panels, which allow for interactive configuration and monitoring. Batch jobs are also available for automated operations.

The system's design prioritizes automation, efficiency, and data protection, providing a robust solution for managing disk backups in a z/OS environment.
