Product Overview

The Data Vault architecture was centered on providing data archiving and management capabilities within the z/OS environment. The main components included the Vault Manager, Data Movers, and the VSAM-based storage mechanism. The Vault Manager was responsible for coordinating archiving and retrieval operations.

Data Movers handled the actual transfer of data between the primary storage and the archive. VSAM (Virtual Storage Access Method) was used for storing the archived data. Communication between components was primarily through internal z/OS mechanisms.

Configuration was managed through JCL and specific datasets, which defined the data sets to be archived, storage locations, and retention policies. Data Vault did not expose any APIs. Security was provided through integration with RACF, which enabled access control and authentication.

Compared to IBM's DFHSM, Data Vault offered specific integration with the z/OS environment. The product's main function was to provide a secure and efficient way to archive and manage data within the z/OS environment.
