Product Overview

The GFS/Stack architecture comprises several key components: the Stack Manager, the Volume Catalog, and the Tape I/O Interceptor. The Stack Manager is responsible for the stacking and unstacking of datasets. It interacts with the Volume Catalog to maintain metadata about stacked datasets, including dataset names, volume serial numbers, and offsets.

The Tape I/O Interceptor intercepts and redirects tape I/O requests, ensuring that the system operates transparently to existing applications and JCL. Communication between components occurs through z/OS system services. The Volume Catalog utilizes z/OS system catalog services for metadata storage.

The system uses a command-line interface (CLI) for administration, allowing administrators to manage stacking policies, monitor system status, and perform other administrative tasks. Security is managed through the z/OS security system, typically using RACF for access control. All operations are logged, and audit trails can be generated for security monitoring and compliance.
