Product Overview

The ClearCase architecture is based on a client-server model, with several key components working together to manage source code and metadata. The ClearCase server is the central component, responsible for managing user authentication, access control, and overall system operations. The VOB server manages the versioned object bases (VOBs), which store the source code, metadata, and version history.

The view server provides a workspace for developers, allowing them to work on specific versions of the code. Communication between these components occurs over a network, typically using TCP/IP. The `cleartool` command-line interface is the primary means of interacting with these components.

ClearCase uses a branching and merging model that allows developers to work on isolated branches and later merge their changes back into the main codebase. ClearCase supports various authentication methods, including integration with operating system user accounts. Access control is managed through user permissions and group memberships.

ClearCase's ability to manage z/OS source code is a key differentiator. ClearCase provides audit trails and logging capabilities for security and compliance.
