Product Overview

PDSEDIT's architecture is centered around batch processing of PDS/PDSE datasets on z/OS. The main components are the command processor, the dataset access module, and the reporting module. The command processor is responsible for parsing user commands and validating input.

The dataset access module handles the interaction with the datasets, including reading, writing, and updating data. The reporting module formats and presents the output of the operations. Communication between these components occurs through standard z/OS system services and internal interfaces.

PDSEDIT does not expose any APIs. It uses no external databases or storage mechanisms beyond the z/OS dataset structures. The command-line interface is the primary means of interaction.

name`. Configuration is primarily managed through JCL parameters and control statements within the batch jobs. User management is handled through the z/OS security system, such as RACF or equivalent, which controls access to datasets and the execution of PDSEDIT jobs.

Monitoring and logging are integrated with z/OS facilities, providing audit trails and operational insights. Security relies on z/OS security features. PDSEDIT does not require any specific network ports or protocols beyond those used by z/OS itself.

Compared to ISPF edit, PDSEDIT offers batch processing capabilities, which are not available in ISPF. It does not offer any REST or SOAP APIs.
