Share Your ExperienceRecovery Utility for VSAM
Product Overview
The architecture of Recovery Utility for VSAM comprises several key components. The Journaling Subsystem intercepts and logs VSAM I/O operations. This subsystem utilizes VSAM's logging capabilities and writes journal records to a dedicated VSAM dataset.
The Backup Manager handles the creation and management of VSAM dataset backups. It uses the `BACKUP` command to create full or incremental backups, storing them on DASD or tape. The Recovery Engine applies journal records and backup data to restore VSAM datasets.
It uses the `RECOVER` command, which processes the backup and journal data to restore the dataset to a specific point in time. The central repository stores metadata about backups, journals, and recovery operations. It is implemented as a VSAM dataset and is accessed by all components.
Communication between components occurs through z/OS system services and VSAM APIs. The utility supports integration with CICS, IMS, and DB2 environments, ensuring data consistency across applications. The utility uses standard z/OS security features for authentication and authorization.
The utility's design allows for automated backup and recovery processes, reducing the need for manual intervention.
