The SAP R/2 architecture is based on a three-tier model: Presentation Server, Application Server, and Database Server. The Presentation Server provides the user interface, allowing users to interact with the system through a terminal interface. The Application Server hosts the business logic and processes transactions.
The Database Server, typically using DB2, stores the data. Communication between these components is facilitated through CICS transactions. The system supports various business processes, including financial accounting, manufacturing, and supply chain logistics.
Key commands include FB01 for financial postings, ME21N for purchase orders, and MB1A for material movements. User authentication is handled through user IDs and passwords, with access control managed through user profiles and roles. The system's design emphasizes data integrity and efficient processing within a mainframe environment.
Compared to SAP R/3, R/2 has a different architecture and a more limited set of features, but it provides core ERP functionality.
