The VPS/XES architecture is designed to convert Xerox XES print streams into IBM AFP format for printing on IPDS or PCL printers within a z/OS environment. The core components include the XES Input Module, which receives and validates the XES data; the Conversion Engine, which performs the transformation; and the AFP Output Module, which generates the AFP output stream. These modules communicate through z/OS internal mechanisms.
The system uses datasets for input and output, and configuration files to define conversion settings, printer characteristics, and other operational parameters. The conversion process is initiated through JCL, which specifies the input XES dataset, the output AFP dataset, and any required conversion parameters. Security is integrated with z/OS, leveraging RBAC for access control.
The system integrates with z/OS logging and monitoring tools. Network requirements depend on the printer connection method, typically using TCP/IP for network printers.
