Product Overview

The architecture of VTAM2Spool comprises several key components that work together to route VTAM print output. The VTAM Listener intercepts SNA/LU print streams from VTAM sessions. The Print Processor formats the print data, handling various control codes and formatting requirements.

The Output Router directs the processed data to the configured destination (JES, POWER, or LPR). Communication between these components is primarily internal, using z/OS or zVSE/VSEn facilities. Configuration data is stored in text-based configuration files, which specify print destinations, formatting options, and logging levels.

The VTAM2Spool address space interacts with the z/OS or zVSE/VSEn system through standard interfaces, including VTAM for network communication and JES/POWER for spooling. For LPR printing, the Output Router uses the LPR protocol to send data to network printers. The system does not use any dedicated databases or storage mechanisms beyond the configuration files and system logs.

The main network requirement is connectivity to the VTAM network and, for LPR printing, connectivity to the network printers. The system uses standard mainframe ports for VTAM communication.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core function of VTAM2Spool?

VTAM2Spool routes print data from VTAM applications (CICS, IMS, etc.) to JES or POWER spool, or directly to LPR printers. It intercepts and processes SNA/LU print streams, making the process transparent to the originating applications. This allows existing applications to leverage modern printing infrastructure without code changes.

Which spooling systems are supported?

VTAM2Spool supports both JES and POWER spool environments. It can direct output to either spool system based on configuration. This flexibility allows organizations to choose the spooling system that best fits their operational needs and existing infrastructure.

Does VTAM2Spool require changes to existing applications?

VTAM2Spool operates transparently to applications. Applications continue to use standard VTAM print facilities. VTAM2Spool intercepts the print data and routes it to the configured destination (spool or LPR printer). No modifications are needed in the application code.

Can VTAM2Spool print directly to network printers?

VTAM2Spool can direct output to LPR printers. This allows for printing to network-attached printers that support the LPR protocol. This feature extends the reach of mainframe printing to a wide range of modern printing devices.
