The architecture of BMC AMI Storage IAM centers around several key components. The IAM catalog manages metadata for IAM data sets, including data set names, attributes, and storage information. IAM/RLS utilizes a shared buffer pool to optimize data access within a single z/OS system.
IAM/PLEX extends this functionality across a Parallel Sysplex, employing a global lock manager to ensure data consistency during record-level sharing. Data sets are organized using a hierarchical structure with control intervals and data intervals. Communication between components occurs through z/OS system services and internal IAM mechanisms.
IAM relies on the z/OS environment for storage, utilizing DASD (Direct Access Storage Devices) for data storage. There are no specific network ports required, as IAM operates within the z/OS environment. The primary administrative interface is through z/OS system commands and utilities, including IDCAMS.
User management is handled through the z/OS security system (RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret). Monitoring and logging are integrated with z/OS facilities, including SMF. IAM/PLEX provides record-level sharing across a Parallel Sysplex, which is a key differentiator compared to VSAM.
