The architecture of FDRCOPY consisted of the FDRCOPY program, the SYSIN DD for control statements, and the SYSUT1 and SYSUT2 DD statements for dataset input and output. The FDRCOPY program was the core component, responsible for executing the copy or move operations. The SYSIN DD contained control statements that specified the datasets to be copied, the target datasets, and other parameters.
The SYSUT1 and SYSUT2 DD statements defined the input and output datasets, respectively. Communication between components occurred through standard z/OS I/O mechanisms. There were no exposed APIs.
The program utilized z/OS system services for I/O operations and dataset access. Configuration was primarily managed through JCL parameters and control statements within the SYSIN DD. For example, a typical dataset copy operation would involve a JCL structure like: //COPYJOB JOB ...
TARGET,DISP=(NEW,CATLG,DELETE),... Security relied on z/OS security features, such as RACF or equivalent, for authentication and access control. There were no specific encryption capabilities within FDRCOPY itself.
Audit logging was handled through z/OS system logs and the SYSPRINT output from the FDRCOPY job. The main competing product was IBM DFSMSdss. FDRCOPY's main function was dataset-level and volume-level copy and move operations.
It is no longer available as a standalone product.
