Product Overview

The architecture of HSM/Advanced Recall is designed to efficiently manage dataset recalls within a z/OS environment. The main components include the Recall Manager, Dataset Monitor, and Configuration Manager. The Recall Manager is the core component responsible for initiating and managing dataset recalls.

It interacts with DFSMShsm to retrieve datasets and ensures they are available before batch jobs require them. The Dataset Monitor continuously tracks dataset usage patterns, analyzing access frequency and predicting future recall needs. This component uses z/OS system services to monitor dataset activity and identify datasets that should be recalled proactively.

The Configuration Manager provides the interface for defining recall policies, dataset selection criteria, and system parameters. Administrators use the CLI to configure these settings, which are stored in configuration files. Communication between components occurs through z/OS system services and internal messaging.

The Dataset Monitor and Recall Manager communicate to coordinate recall actions based on the defined policies. The Configuration Manager interacts with the other components to apply the configured settings. The product does not use a dedicated database; instead, it relies on z/OS facilities for data management and storage.

Network requirements are minimal, as the components communicate within the z/OS environment. The primary administrative interface is the CLI, which provides commands for starting, stopping, and monitoring the system. User management is handled through the z/OS security system (RACF, ACF2, or Top Secret), and access control is managed through security profiles.

The product integrates with SMF records for auditing and logging, providing a comprehensive view of system activity. HSM/Advanced Recall's architecture is optimized for performance and efficiency, ensuring minimal overhead and maximum benefit in reducing batch processing times.
