The architecture of IBM OMEGAMON for z/OS is designed to provide comprehensive monitoring and management capabilities for z/OS environments. The core components include the OMEGAMON address space, monitoring agents, and the Tivoli Enterprise Portal (TEP). The OMEGAMON address space is the central component responsible for collecting and processing performance data.
It interacts with various z/OS subsystems to gather metrics on CPU usage, memory utilization, disk I/O, and other system resources. Monitoring agents are deployed to monitor specific subsystems and applications, such as CICS, DB2, and MQ. These agents collect detailed performance data and send it to the OMEGAMON address space.
Communication between the OMEGAMON address space and the agents occurs through internal z/OS mechanisms, including cross-memory services and shared memory. The Tivoli Enterprise Portal (TEP) provides a graphical user interface for viewing and analyzing the collected data. It allows administrators to monitor real-time performance metrics, view historical data, and create custom dashboards.
The TEP communicates with the OMEGAMON address space and agents through the Tivoli Enterprise Monitoring Server (TEMS). Configuration is managed through PARMGEN, which generates the necessary configuration files for the agents and the OMEGAMON address space. The configuration parameters include agent settings, data collection intervals, and performance thresholds.
OMEGAMON integrates with RACF for authentication and uses role-based access control (RBAC) to manage user permissions. The product also provides extensive logging capabilities for auditing and troubleshooting. Compared to other monitoring solutions, OMEGAMON offers deep integration with z/OS, providing detailed insights into system behavior.
