Product Overview

The architecture of Mainstar Clone and Rename for IMS is centered around three primary components: the Clone Engine, the Rename Utility, and the optional Rapid Database Refresh module. The Clone Engine is responsible for initiating and managing the cloning process, leveraging disk volume cloning facilities like IBM SnapShot or IBM FlashCopy. It interacts directly with the z/OS system to perform the low-level copy operations.

The Rename Utility is responsible for renaming the cloned databases after the copy process is complete. This component ensures that the cloned databases can be used in different environments without conflicts. The Rapid Database Refresh module provides dataset-level copying capabilities, offering a faster alternative to full volume cloning in certain scenarios.

The communication between these components is managed through the z/OS operating system and the underlying storage infrastructure. The product does not expose external APIs. The product relies on the z/OS security infrastructure for authentication and access control, utilizing RACF or equivalent security managers.

All operations are logged, and the logs can be used for auditing and troubleshooting. The primary interface is the command-line interface (CLI), which is used to execute commands and configure the product. Configuration parameters are typically defined in JCL or control statements.
