The architecture of PEngiBAT comprises several key components that work together to generate batch COBOL applications. The central component is the Specification Editor, a GUI-based tool used to define application logic. This includes defining data structures, business rules, and processing steps.
The Code Generator is the core engine that processes the specifications created in the Specification Editor. It translates these specifications into COBOL source code. The generated code can interact with various databases and storage mechanisms supported by COBOL on z/OS, such as VSAM files and DB2 databases.
The Runtime Environment provides the necessary infrastructure to execute the generated COBOL applications. Communication between components is primarily internal, with the Specification Editor and Code Generator interacting through a defined interface. Configuration files are used to manage settings such as code generation parameters and database connection details.
The generated COBOL applications can be integrated with z/OS security features, including RACF, for access control. The CLI provides commands for code generation and other administrative tasks. PEngiBAT's architecture is designed to streamline the COBOL application development process by automating code generation and promoting consistent coding standards.
