RLX/VSAM

The architecture of RLX/VSAM is centered around its integration with the z/OS operating system and its use of REXX as the primary interface for VSAM data access. The main components include the REXX interpreter, the VSAM access module, and the z/OS file system. The REXX interpreter processes REXX scripts containing RLX/VSAM commands.

The VSAM access module handles the interaction with VSAM datasets, translating REXX commands into VSAM file I/O operations. The z/OS file system provides the underlying storage and management of VSAM files. Communication between these components occurs through internal z/OS interfaces.

The REXX interpreter calls the VSAM access module, which in turn interacts with the z/OS file system to perform operations such as opening, reading, writing, and closing VSAM files. RLX/VSAM utilizes VSAM as its primary storage mechanism, leveraging the features and capabilities of VSAM for data storage and retrieval. There are no specific network ports required for RLX/VSAM operations, as all communication occurs within the z/OS environment.

The configuration of RLX/VSAM involves defining dataset attributes and access parameters, typically managed through z/OS system configurations. This includes specifying file names, record formats, and access methods. RLX/VSAM does not expose external APIs such as REST or SOAP.

Instead, it offers a native REXX interface. Compared to other VSAM access methods, RLX/VSAM offers a streamlined approach for REXX-based applications, simplifying VSAM data manipulation.
