Tape Encryption

The architecture of Tape Encryption comprises several key components. The Encryption Engine resides within the z/OS environment and intercepts data writes to tape. It uses AES encryption algorithms to encrypt data.

The Key Manager securely stores and manages the encryption keys, ensuring key integrity and security. The system integrates with DFSMS, using data class definitions to determine which datasets are encrypted. The decryption client, available on platforms like Windows and UNIX, decrypts data during the read process.

Communication between the z/OS system and the decryption clients uses standard TCP/IP. The system does not expose a direct API; encryption is transparent to applications. The configuration is primarily managed through DFSMS data classes, with parameters such as ENCRYPT(YES) controlling encryption behavior.

The system utilizes SMF records for auditing, providing detailed logs of encryption and decryption events. The storage mechanism for encryption keys is a secure key management system, ensuring key protection and availability. The system's design prioritizes minimal impact on existing applications, ensuring a smooth transition to encrypted tape storage.
