The architecture of Tivoli Automated Tape Allocation Manager (ATAM) is centered around the efficient sharing of tape resources within a z/OS environment. The core components include the ATAM address space, which is the main control point for ATAM operations. The allocation manager handles requests for tape drive allocation, ensuring that drives are assigned efficiently and according to defined policies.
The device manager is responsible for interacting with the physical tape drives and managing their status. The volume manager maintains information about tape volumes, including their location and availability. These components communicate via z/OS system services, leveraging cross-memory services for efficient data transfer and control.
ATAM uses VSAM datasets to store configuration data, including tape drive definitions, volume pool definitions, and allocation policies. The ISPF interface and batch jobs using JCL are used for configuration and management. Security is integrated through z/OS RACF, which provides authentication and access control.
ATAM does not use network ports directly, relying on z/OS system services for communication. The system design prioritizes high availability and minimal overhead, ensuring that tape resources are managed efficiently and reliably.
