The architecture of Database Restructure for IMS (DBR for IMS) is designed to facilitate low-outage database restructuring and HALDB conversion on z/OS. The main components include the Control Module, the Data Manipulation Engine, and the Logging and Reporting Module. The Control Module is responsible for parsing control statements, managing the overall process, and coordinating the activities of other components.
The Data Manipulation Engine performs the actual database restructuring operations, such as adding or deleting indexes, converting to HALDB, and modifying segment structures. The Logging and Reporting Module captures detailed information about the restructuring process, including progress, errors, and performance metrics. Communication between these components occurs through z/OS system services and internal control blocks.
DBR for IMS utilizes a control file interface for defining the restructuring parameters. The control file specifies the operations to be performed, the database structures to be modified, and other relevant settings. The product supports various IMS database types and versions.
The Data Manipulation Engine interacts directly with the IMS database using IMS APIs. The product does not expose external APIs. The administrative interface is primarily through JCL and control statements.
User management relies on z/OS security, such as RACF, for authentication and authorization. Monitoring and logging are critical for tracking progress and identifying issues. The Logging and Reporting Module provides detailed logs and reports.
The product's design emphasizes automation, minimizing manual intervention and reducing the risk of errors. The architecture is optimized for performance, ensuring minimal impact on system resources during restructuring operations. The product's focus on low-outage restructuring and HALDB conversion differentiates it from other IMS utilities.
