DYNUTIL's architecture is designed for efficient data restoration from z/VSE CA Dynam/D backups to z/OS. The core components include the Control Program, Data Transfer Engine, Conversion Module, and Logging Subsystem. The Control Program orchestrates the entire process, managing the execution of commands and coordinating the activities of other components.

The Data Transfer Engine is responsible for moving data between the source (backup files) and the target datasets on z/OS. It utilizes standard mainframe protocols such as TCP/IP for network communication and VSAM for dataset access. The Conversion Module handles data format transformations, ensuring compatibility between z/VSE and z/OS datasets.

This module supports various data type conversions, including character set conversions and record format adjustments. The Logging Subsystem provides detailed audit trails of all operations, including user actions, data transfers, and errors. The CLI provides commands such as RESTORE, CONVERT, and LIST.

The RESTORE command syntax is RESTORE FROM(backup_file) TO(target_dataset). The CONVERT command syntax is CONVERT INPUT(source_file) OUTPUT(target_file). Configuration files are used to specify parameters such as source and destination datasets, data conversion options, and logging settings.

DYNUTIL integrates with the mainframe's security system, such as RACF, for authentication and access control. The tool's design prioritizes data integrity, efficiency, and ease of use, making it a valuable asset for data migration and disaster recovery.
