The architecture of Enterprise COBOL on z/OS comprises several key components. The COBOL compiler is the central component, responsible for translating COBOL source code into executable machine code. This process involves lexical analysis, parsing, semantic analysis, code generation, and optimization.
The compiler uses JCL (Job Control Language) to receive input and specify compiler options. The Language Environment (LE) provides the runtime environment for COBOL programs. LE manages memory allocation, exception handling, and other runtime services.
The linkage editor is used to create executable modules from the compiled object code and any required libraries. The z/OS operating system provides the underlying infrastructure, including memory management, I/O services, and security. Communication between components occurs through various interfaces.
The compiler interacts with the z/OS operating system through system calls. The compiled code relies on LE runtime libraries for execution. Data storage is primarily handled through z/OS file systems, including VSAM and sequential files.
Network requirements depend on the application's needs, but typically involve TCP/IP for communication with other systems. Security is managed through the z/OS security infrastructure, such as RACF, which provides authentication and access control. Audit and logging capabilities are provided through z/OS system logs and SMF records.
Enterprise COBOL competes with other COBOL compilers, but its tight integration with z/OS and its performance characteristics make it a strong choice for mainframe environments.
