The architecture of R+/RESOURCE MAXIMIZER consisted of several key components designed to facilitate backup and recovery operations for Db2 on z/OS. The Recovery Manager was responsible for coordinating recovery operations, while the Backup Agent handled the creation of backups, and the Restore Agent managed the restoration of data. These components communicated through native Db2 interfaces, leveraging Db2's internal APIs for data access and manipulation.
The product utilized ISMF (Interactive Storage Management Facility) and Db2 catalog information to manage datasets and recovery points. ISMF was used to allocate and manage the storage for backup datasets, while the Db2 catalog provided metadata about the database objects and their relationships. The primary interface for interacting with R+/RESOURCE MAXIMIZER was through JCL (Job Control Language) and TSO (Time Sharing Option) commands.
For example, a full database backup could be initiated using a JCL job that executed the `BACKUP DATABASE` command, specifying the database name and the target dataset for the backup. Similarly, the `RECOVER TABLESPACE` command, also executed via JCL, would restore a tablespace from a backup. The product did not expose any APIs for external integration.
