Product Overview

The STAIRS architecture comprised several key components. The database manager handled the storage and retrieval of documents and metadata. The indexing engine processed documents to create indexes for efficient searching.

The search engine used these indexes to locate documents based on user queries. Communication between these components was internal to the system. The system used a hierarchical database structure.

The command-line interface (CLI) was the primary means of interaction. Key commands included `CREATE DATABASE`, `INDEX DOCUMENT`, `SEARCH`, `DISPLAY DOCUMENT`, and `DELETE DOCUMENT`. Configuration was primarily done through system parameters and database definitions.

STAIRS is no longer supported; migrate to a modern system.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was the primary function of STAIRS?

STAIRS was a system for creating, storing, viewing, and searching documents. It allowed users to index and retrieve information using keywords and Boolean operators. It was designed to manage large volumes of textual data.

How did users interact with documents stored in STAIRS?

STAIRS supported the creation of databases containing documents. Users could then search these databases using a query language that supported Boolean operators (AND, OR, NOT) and proximity searches. The system provided tools for document formatting and display.

What platforms did STAIRS operate on?

STAIRS was primarily used on IBM mainframe systems, specifically z/OS and z/VM. It was designed to leverage the processing power and storage capabilities of these platforms for efficient document management.

What product replaced STAIRS?

STAIRS was replaced by SearchManager/370. This product offered similar functionality with enhancements. The migration path involved converting existing STAIRS databases to the new format supported by SearchManager/370.
