Product Overview
The architecture of Tivoli Storage Manager for z/OS comprised several key components. The z/OS client, the primary interface for backup and archive operations, interacted with the Tivoli Storage Manager server. The CLI provided the administrative interface for managing backups, archives, and user access.
The system utilized storage pools for storing backup and archive data. Communication between the client and server occurred over TCP/IP. The client used commands such as `dsmc backup` to initiate backups of USS HFS and zFS files.
User authentication was handled through user IDs and passwords. The system did not directly expose REST or SOAP APIs, but the CLI could be scripted for automation. The product is not supported.
IBM Spectrum Protect offers a similar architecture and is the recommended replacement. Migration involves installing and configuring the Spectrum Protect client on z/OS, defining storage pools, and migrating existing data. Other solutions include Commvault, Veritas NetBackup, Dell EMC NetWorker, and Asigra.
