The architecture of IMS High Performance Load (HPL) is designed for high-speed data loading in IMS environments. The main components include the Load Engine, Data Input Readers, Data Sorters, and Database Writer. The Load Engine coordinates the overall load process, managing the flow of data and resources.
Data Input Readers are responsible for retrieving data from the input data sets. These readers support various data formats and can handle different input sources. Data Sorters organize the data, preparing it for insertion into the IMS database.
The sorting process optimizes data placement and improves load performance. The Database Writer inserts the sorted data into the IMS database. This component interacts directly with the IMS database to write the data.
Communication between components is managed internally by the Load Engine. Data flows from the Data Input Readers to the Data Sorters and then to the Database Writer. HPL utilizes z/OS system services for I/O operations, memory management, and other system-level tasks.
The utility leverages parallel processing to maximize throughput. Multiple tasks can be executed concurrently to load data, significantly reducing load times. HPL uses JCL to define the input data sets, database definitions, and control parameters.
The JCL specifies the input data set names, database DD statements, and load options. HPL integrates with z/OS security features, such as RACF, for access control and auditing. All load operations are logged, and audit trails can be generated to track activities.
Compared to the standard IMS load utility, HPL's architecture is optimized for performance, utilizing parallel processing and efficient resource management.
