Product Overview

The architecture of Multiterm/VM comprises several key components. The Session Manager is the central component, responsible for handling user commands, managing sessions, and routing data between the 3270 terminal and the VTAM applications. The VTAM Interface facilitates communication with VTAM, translating 3270 data streams and managing SNA protocol interactions.

Configuration Files store settings such as application LU names, user profiles, and session parameters. These files are read during system startup and are used to configure the behavior of the Session Manager. The z/VM environment provides the underlying operating system and virtualization capabilities, managing resources and providing a secure environment for Multiterm/VM.

Communication between the 3270 terminal and the Session Manager uses the SNA protocol. The Session Manager communicates with VTAM using SNA, ensuring reliable data transmission. Data is not encrypted by Multiterm/VM; security relies on the underlying z/VM and VTAM security configurations.

The Session Manager does not expose any APIs. Compared to other terminal emulators, Multiterm/VM focuses on session management rather than terminal emulation, providing a streamlined experience for accessing multiple mainframe applications simultaneously. The `CONNECT` command initiates a session, the `SWITCH` command toggles between sessions, and the `DISCONNECT` command terminates a session.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the core function of Multiterm/VM?

Multiterm/VM allows a single 3270 device to connect to multiple VTAM applications. It functions as a session manager, enabling users to switch between different applications without needing separate physical terminals or multiple emulator sessions. This enhances user productivity and streamlines access to various mainframe resources.

How do users start and manage sessions?

Users can initiate sessions using the `CONNECT` command, specifying the application LU name. The `SWITCH` command allows users to quickly move between active sessions. The `DISCONNECT` command terminates a session. These commands are entered directly at the 3270 terminal.

What are the primary benefits of using Multiterm/VM?

Multiterm/VM is designed to improve the efficiency of 3270 terminal usage. It consolidates access to multiple applications, reducing the need for multiple terminal sessions or devices. This leads to better resource utilization and a more streamlined user experience for mainframe interactions.

What are the key components and dependencies of Multiterm/VM?

The product is deployed on z/VM, leveraging the virtualization capabilities of the platform. It integrates with VTAM to manage 3270 sessions. Configuration involves defining application LU names and user profiles, typically managed through configuration files.
