The architecture of PC/370 comprised three main components: the assembler, the linker, and the 370 emulator. The assembler translated 370 assembly language source code into object files. The linker combined these object files, along with any necessary library files, into a single executable program.
The 370 emulator provided the runtime environment, simulating the behavior of a mainframe. The assembler supported a subset of the 370 instruction set, including instructions for data manipulation, control flow, and I/O operations. The linker handled symbol resolution, library linking, and the creation of the program's load module.
The emulator interpreted the assembled instructions, managing memory, registers, and I/O operations. There were no APIs exposed. Communication was primarily through file I/O for source code, object files, and executables.
