The architecture of MaxBack/VSE is centered around three primary components: the Backup Engine, Dataset Access Modules, and the Control Interface. The Backup Engine is the core component, responsible for coordinating the backup and restore processes. It manages the overall workflow, including dataset selection, data transfer, and error handling.
The Dataset Access Modules are designed to interact with specific dataset types, such as VSAM, sequential, DL/1, ISAM, and DAM. Each module handles the low-level details of reading and writing data to the respective dataset format. The Control Interface provides the user interface for administrative tasks.
It processes user commands, manages configuration settings, and interacts with the Backup Engine and Dataset Access Modules. Communication between components is primarily internal, using zVSE system calls and data structures. The system utilizes VSAM for catalog storage, which stores metadata about the backed-up datasets, including dataset names, locations, and backup timestamps.
The CLI is the primary administrative interface. There are no external APIs. The system relies on zVSE's security features for authentication and access control.
The product's design prioritizes data integrity and operational efficiency within the zVSE environment. The system's architecture is optimized for high-performance backup and restore operations, ensuring minimal impact on system resources.
